Worries About the Future are Not God's Design For Us
Worrying about the future is not in God's design for us because He desires us to live in trust and rest in His care. When we worry, we take our focus off God’s love and faithfulness and put it onto things we cannot control. This can lead to anxiety, distraction, and a separation from the peace He provides. Worry is counterproductive to the life of faith that God has called us to. Throughout Scripture, we see God's care for His people, encouraging them to focus on today and let tomorrow rest in His hands. Jesus taught His followers to seek God's Kingdom first, trusting that all things needed will be added unto them (Matthew 6:33). Worrying about the future not only weakens our trust in God but also keeps us from living in the present moment where God is actively working and blessing us. God’s desire for us is to live free from the chains of fear and anxiety, to recognize that He is in control of all things, even the unknown. When we cling to worry, we lose the freedom He intends for us and miss the joy of walking closely with Him. Addressing this issue helps us to deepen our faith and remember that God’s love and providence are steadfast. He has promised to be with us always and to work all things together for good to those who love Him. By focusing on these promises, we align ourselves with His design and find rest in His sovereign care over our future.
Jesus Helps with Worries About the Future
Jesus, in His teaching, directly addressed worry about the future. He encouraged us not to be anxious about tomorrow, reminding us that each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34). Jesus called His followers to a life of trust, not fear, saying that even the birds and flowers are cared for by the Father, and that we are worth much more than these. His assurance to us is rooted in God’s love and His intimate knowledge of all our needs. Jesus invites us to lay down our fears and anxieties at His feet and to seek the Kingdom first, trusting that God will provide all else that we need. By focusing on Jesus and His promises, we find a solid foundation for peace. Jesus never promised a life free from challenges, but He assured us of His presence and help in every situation. In John 14:27, He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” When we look to Jesus, we are reminded that His peace is a lasting one, capable of overcoming any fear or worry about the future. His love assures us that we are seen, known, and cared for by our Heavenly Father.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come to You with the worries and fears I have about my future. I lay them down before You, trusting in Your promises and Your love for me. Help me to focus on today and to find comfort in Your presence, knowing that You are my protector and provider. Lord, fill me with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and give me the strength to walk confidently into each new day, knowing that You are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
